The bottlenose dolphin is the dolphin most people know — the one in the aquarium show, on the nature documentary, riding the bow wave of a boat. Behind the permanent “smile” is one of the most socially and cognitively complex animals in the ocean.

Overview

Bottlenose dolphins live in almost every temperate and tropical sea on Earth, from the surf zone to the deep open ocean. Populations split roughly into two ecotypes: smaller, lighter coastal dolphins that work harbours, estuaries, and shallow banks, and larger, more robust offshore dolphins that range far out and dive deep. They are toothed whales (odontocetes), close relatives of orcas and pilot whales.

Physical characteristics

The body is a fast, streamlined torpedo with a tall curved dorsal fin, powerful tail flukes that drive it forward with up-and-down strokes, and flippers used for steering. The “bottle nose” is a short, thick beak lined with 72–104 conical teeth used for gripping — not chewing — slippery prey.

A dolphin breathes through a single blowhole on top of the head, under conscious control, and can renew around 80% of the air in its lungs with each breath (a human manages about 15%). Beneath the skin is a layer of blubber for insulation, energy storage, and streamlining.

Senses and hunting

Vision is good both in and out of water, but the dolphin’s defining sense is echolocation. It produces streams of clicks, up to hundreds per second, and interprets the echoes to build a detailed picture of its surroundings in complete darkness or murky water. Using this, dolphins detect fish buried in sediment and coordinate group hunts.

Hunting techniques are often local traditions passed between generations:

  • Fish-whacking — flicking a fish clear of the water with the tail to stun it.
  • Mud-ring feeding — one dolphin swims a tight circle stirring up a wall of mud that traps fish, which then leap out into the waiting pod.
  • Sponging — in Shark Bay, Australia, some dolphins carry a marine sponge on the beak to protect it while probing the rough seafloor for prey, a rare example of animal tool use taught mother to daughter.

Behaviour and society

Bottlenose dolphins live in fluid groups called pods, typically a few to a few dozen animals, that constantly split and merge (a “fission–fusion” society). Males often form tight, lifelong alliances of two or three that cooperate to find mates and defend against rival alliances.

They are highly vocal — whistles for communication, clicks for echolocation, and burst-pulse squawks during social conflict — and engage in play, cooperation, and, at times, aggression and coercion. They have passed the mirror self-recognition test, a marker of self-awareness shared with great apes and elephants.

Reproduction and life cycle

Females give birth to a single calf after a 12-month pregnancy, usually tail-first. The calf nurses for up to two years and often stays with its mother for three to six years, learning where to feed and how to hunt. Females may live into their fifties and can act as grandmothers within the pod; males have shorter average lifespans, worn down by decades of competition.

Threats and conservation

Globally the species is Least Concern, but it faces steady pressure from human activity:

  • Bycatch — accidental capture and drowning in fishing nets and lines.
  • Pollution — dolphins accumulate industrial chemicals and heavy metals at the top of the food chain, which suppress immunity and reproduction.
  • Underwater noise from shipping, sonar, and construction, which interferes with the echolocation and communication they depend on.
  • Habitat loss and disturbance in the busy coastal waters coastal populations rely on.

How does dolphin echolocation work?

The dolphin sends clicks from an organ in its forehead called the melon, then reads the returning echoes through its lower jaw, which channels the sound to the inner ear. From the echoes it can judge a fish's size, shape, speed, distance, and even whether it is hiding under sand — a form of biological sonar.

Do dolphins have names for each other?

Effectively, yes. Each dolphin develops a unique "signature whistle" in its first year and uses it to announce itself. Other dolphins copy that whistle to get its attention, and mothers and calves exchange them constantly — one of the few known cases of animals addressing each other as individuals.

Are bottlenose dolphins endangered?

The species as a whole is listed as Least Concern — it is widespread and adaptable. But some local populations, especially in enclosed seas and near heavy fishing or industry, are small, isolated, and declining.

How do dolphins sleep without drowning?

They shut down one half of the brain at a time. One hemisphere stays awake to keep swimming, surface for air, and watch for danger, while the other rests; after a couple of hours they switch. They never fully lose consciousness.
