The emperor penguin is the only animal that breeds in the open during the Antarctic winter. Everything about its biology is a solution to one problem: raising a chick in the coldest, windiest, darkest place on Earth.
Overview
Emperor penguins live around the entire Antarctic coast, in about 60 known colonies. Unlike other penguins they almost never come onto land; they breed on fast ice — sea ice that stays frozen and attached to the continent or to grounded icebergs long enough to see a chick through to fledging. That dependence on stable ice sits at the centre of their conservation story.
Built for the cold and the deep
An emperor penguin is insulated by roughly 100 feathers per square inch — short, stiff, overlapping and partly filled with air — over a thick layer of fat. It can also:
- Recover heat with counter-current blood vessels in the legs, wings and nasal passages, so warm outgoing blood pre-heats cold returning blood.
- Drop its metabolism and let its feet and outer feathers cool close to freezing while keeping the core warm.
- Huddle. Thousands of birds pack together at up to 10 per square metre, and the huddle slowly churns so each bird cycles through the warm interior. Huddling roughly halves how much energy a fasting male burns.
For hunting, the emperor is the deepest-diving bird. Solid rather than air-filled bones reduce buoyancy, the heart rate slows to a few beats per minute on long dives, and oxygen is stored in muscle rather than lungs.
Diet and hunting
Emperors eat fish (especially Antarctic silverfish), krill and squid, caught on dives that usually last a few minutes but can exceed twenty. They hunt in the water column and right at the underside of the sea ice, sometimes cooperatively, and can travel well over 100 km from the colony to reach open water or productive feeding grounds.
The breeding march
The breeding cycle is extreme:
- March–April. As the sea freezes, adults walk 50–120 km inland from the ice edge to traditional colony sites and pair up.
- May–June. The female lays a single egg, passes it to the male, and returns to the sea to feed. The male tucks the egg onto his feet under a brood pouch and begins a fast of about 65 days in temperatures down to −40 °C and winds over 150 km/h.
- July–August. The chick hatches around the time the female returns with food. The male, having lost 45% of his body weight, finally walks back to the sea.
- Spring–summer. Parents alternate foraging trips. Older chicks gather in groups called crèches. By December–January the sea ice is breaking up near the colony, and the chicks — now waterproofed with adult feathers — enter the ocean.
The timing is a tightrope: the ice has to last long enough for chicks to fledge, but not so long that adults face an impossible walk to food.
Threats and conservation
The emperor penguin is listed as Near Threatened, and it is one of the clearest examples of a species whose future is tied to climate. Its colonies need sea ice that forms early, stays stable through winter and spring, and then breaks up — a narrow window that warming is disrupting from both ends.
- Sea ice loss. Years of record-low Antarctic sea ice have already caused breeding failures, including colonies where entire cohorts of chicks drowned or froze when ice broke up early.
- Prey shifts. Krill and silverfish distributions are changing with ice and ocean conditions.
- Cumulative pressure from industrial fishing for krill in the Southern Ocean and, locally, disturbance.
Under high-emissions projections, most emperor colonies are expected to be in steep decline by 2100; under strong emissions cuts, far more of them persist. In 2022 the species was listed as Threatened under the US Endangered Species Act on the basis of those projections.
