Orca vs Great White Shark
For decades the great white was cast as the ocean’s ultimate predator. Then researchers started filming what happens when orcas show up. The great white is powerful, but it is not the top of this food chain.

Orca vs Great White Shark: common questions
Can an orca kill a great white shark?
Yes, and it has been filmed doing so off South Africa and California. Orcas flip the shark upside down to induce a paralysed state called tonic immobility, then bite it open and eat the energy-rich liver, often leaving the rest of the carcass.
Are great white sharks afraid of orcas?
They act like it. When orcas known to hunt sharks appear at a seal colony, great whites vanish from the area — in one South African study for up to several weeks or months — abandoning prime hunting grounds rather than risk an encounter.
Which is bigger, an orca or a great white?
The orca. A large male orca reaches 8 metres and 6 tonnes, while a big great white is around 5 metres and up to 2 tonnes.
