The Gila monster is a heavy, slow, brightly patterned lizard of the North American deserts — one of the very few venomous lizards in the world, an animal that does almost nothing for most of the year, and the unlikely source of a major class of modern medicines.

Overview

Gila monsters live in the desert and thornscrub of the US Southwest and northwestern Mexico, in rocky foothills, canyon bottoms, and desert grassland with plenty of burrows and crevices. They are among the most sedentary of all reptiles, spending the overwhelming majority of their lives in shelters and appearing above ground mainly in the mild months of spring and during the summer monsoon.

Venom without fangs

The Gila monster and its close relative the Mexican beaded lizard were long the only lizards known to be venomous (some monitor lizards and iguanians are now thought to produce mild venoms too). Unlike a snake, the Gila monster has no injecting fangs. Its venom glands sit in the lower jaw, and venom flows along grooves in the teeth as the lizard bites and chews, holding on with a bulldog grip. The venom is potent, and a bite is agonising, but the delivery is crude and the dose small, so bites — which essentially only occur when the animal is picked up — are medical emergencies but not usually life-threatening.

A life of fasting

Everything about the Gila monster is tuned to a scarce, unpredictable food supply. It eats large, infrequent meals — raiding nests for eggs and newborn animals — and stores the surplus as fat in its tail, which visibly fattens and thins over the year. It can survive on a handful of meals annually and go months without eating. Its metabolism is slow even for a reptile.

The diabetes connection

In studying the Gila monster’s venom in the 1990s, scientists isolated exendin-4, a peptide that closely mimics the human hormone GLP-1, which triggers insulin release after a meal — but which the lizard’s version resists breaking down for hours rather than minutes. A synthetic form became the diabetes drug exenatide, and the GLP-1 pathway it opened up is now the basis of some of the most widely prescribed treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Threats and conservation

The Gila monster is listed as Near Threatened and is declining. Habitat loss to desert development and agriculture, road mortality, and illegal collection for the pet trade are the main pressures, worsened by the animal’s very slow reproduction — a female lays a small clutch of eggs only every year or two. It is fully protected by law across its US range, where it was one of the first venomous animals to receive legal protection.

How venomous is a Gila monster?

Its venom is roughly as toxic as a western diamondback rattlesnake's, but a Gila monster delivers far less of it and in a much less efficient way — it has no hollow fangs, and must bite down and chew, working venom into the wound along grooves in its lower teeth. A bite is intensely painful, causes swelling and a drop in blood pressure, and often means the lizard has to be pried off. But no human death has been definitively attributed to a wild Gila monster in modern records, and bites almost always happen when someone deliberately handles one.

Why does a Gila monster spend so much time underground?

Energy and water. The desert is hot, dry, and unpredictable, so the Gila monster minimises its exposure — sheltering in burrows and rock crevices, emerging mainly in spring and after summer rains, and often being active for only a few dozen days a year. It survives long fasts by living off fat stored in its plump tail, and a well-fed adult can go months between meals.

How did a Gila monster help treat diabetes?

Researchers studying its venom found a hormone-like molecule called exendin-4, which mimics a human gut hormone (GLP-1) that stimulates insulin release after eating — but lasts far longer in the body. A synthetic version, exenatide, was approved in 2005 as a type 2 diabetes treatment, and the same GLP-1 pathway is the basis of the newer, widely used diabetes and weight-loss drugs. The Gila monster's slow, feast-and-famine metabolism is thought to be why its version of the hormone is so stable.

What does a Gila monster eat if it barely moves?

Mostly the contents of nests. Gila monsters raid the burrows and nests of ground-nesting birds, rodents, tortoises, and other reptiles, eating eggs and helpless young, and they can consume a third of their body weight in one sitting. Because eggs and nestlings are seasonal and rich, a few big raids a year are enough. They track prey and nests largely by smell, flicking the forked tongue like a snake.
