The blue tang is the fish everyone recognises even if they do not know the name — the vivid royal-blue, yellow-tailed reef fish that became Dory on screen. Behind the colour is a surgeonfish: a plankton-picking reef grazer armed with a pair of hidden blades.
Overview
Blue tangs live on coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, favouring clear, current-swept outer-reef slopes where plankton drifts past. Adults gather in loose groups, often mixed with other surgeonfish, feeding in the water column by day and sheltering in the reef at night. Juveniles are more secretive, staying close to branching coral heads.
The surgeonfish blade
Blue tangs belong to the surgeonfish family, named for the sharp, scalpel-like spine set in a groove on each side of the tail base. Normally folded flat and nearly invisible, the spines snap outward when the fish arches its body, turning a swipe of the tail into a slashing defence. It is used against predators and rival fish, and it makes a blue tang a fish to handle with care.
Defence
Beyond the blades, the blue tang relies on behaviour. Threatened, it may jam itself into a coral crevice and erect its spines so it cannot be dragged out, or it may simply fall on its side and lie motionless on the bottom, “playing dead” until the danger passes — an unusual response for a reef fish. The bright yellow of juveniles is thought to be camouflage among yellowish corals and stinging hydroids that share the colour.
Diet and role on the reef
Young blue tangs are algae grazers; adults become planktivores, hanging above the reef to pick copepods and other tiny animals from the current, while still nibbling algae. Surgeonfish grazing is important to reef health: by keeping fast-growing algae in check, they leave space and light for corals, and reefs that lose their surgeonfish often shift toward algal dominance.
Reproduction and the aquarium trade
Blue tangs spawn in groups at dusk, releasing eggs and sperm into the water; the larvae drift for weeks before settling. That long, fragile larval phase is why the species resisted captive breeding until 2016 — and why, for decades, essentially every blue tang in the aquarium trade was caught wild, sometimes with cyanide, damaging reefs and killing many fish before sale. The species is common and listed as Least Concern overall, but sustainable sourcing and the slow scaling-up of captive breeding matter for the reefs where collection is heaviest.

Is the blue tang the same fish as Dory?
Yes — Dory in "Finding Nemo" and "Finding Dory" is a blue tang, Paracanthurus hepatus, also sold in the aquarium trade as the regal tang, palette surgeonfish, or hippo tang. Unlike Nemo the clownfish, the blue tang was not successfully bred in captivity until 2016, so for years virtually every blue tang in a home aquarium was taken from a wild reef, and conservationists worried the films would drive damaging demand.
Why is it called a surgeonfish?
Because of the "scalpel." Blue tangs and their relatives have a sharp, blade-like spine folded into a groove on each side of the body at the base of the tail. When the fish feels threatened it flexes its body and the spines flick out to the sides, and a swipe of the tail can slash a predator — or a careless aquarist. In some surgeonfish the spine is venomous; the blue tang's is not, but the cut is deep and slow to heal.
What does a blue tang do when a predator appears?
Two main tricks. It can wedge itself into a crack in the coral and lock its tail spines outward so it cannot be pulled out. Or it can "play dead" — dropping onto its side on the seabed and lying completely still until the threat loses interest, a behaviour seen in both juveniles and adults. Juvenile blue tangs are bright yellow, which helps them blend in among yellow-tinged coral and stinging hydroids.
What do blue tangs eat?
It changes with age. Juveniles graze algae off the reef, like most surgeonfish. Adults shift to feeding largely on plankton in the open water above the reef, gathering in loose aggregations to pick zooplankton from the current, and still grazing some algae. By cropping algae, surgeonfish as a group help keep reefs from being smothered and give corals room to grow.
